Have you ever looked at the news, the shows trending online, or the things our culture celebrates and felt something deep inside you say, “This isn’t right… something is off”?
If so, you aren’t crazy. You aren’t “too spiritual,” and you aren’t being judgmental. You are experiencing the exact same Holy Spirit conviction that the Apostle Paul felt in Acts 17.
When Paul walked into Athens—a stunning, educated, and artistic city—he didn’t just see culture; he saw spiritual crisis. Scripture says “his spirit was provoked within him” as he looked around a city consumed by idols. Paul wasn’t angry at the people—he was deeply burdened by the darkness.
We live in a modern Athens. Our idols aren’t always carved stone statues; they are wrapped in screen time, self-worship, celebrity obsession, greed, and spiritual compromise disguised as “freedom.” We see worldliness celebrated and sin normalized as harmless entertainment.
Whatever captures your attention eventually captures your heart. Whatever you tolerate will eventually shape your walk with God.
Paul didn’t ignore the idols, nor did he run away in fear. He let his holy disturbance drive him to pray, guard his heart, and preach Jesus boldly. Today, God is calling us to be spiritually awake. Not angry, not self-righteous, but disturbed enough by the noise of this world to stay fiercely close to the cross.
A Declaration of Faith
“Lord, awaken my spirit. Help me see what You see. I refuse to bow to the idols of this world. My heart belongs to You alone.”
A Prayer for the Journey Father, thank You for giving me a sensitive spirit like Paul. When I see worldliness and spiritual distractions around me, help me stay awake and aware. Protect my heart, my mind, my home, and my walk with You. Remove anything that competes for my affection, and keep me close to Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
