Lakewood church founded on Mother’s Day, May 10, 1959 by John Osteen and his wife Dodie, originally as “Lakewood Baptist Church” in a tent in northeast Houston. The church later became non-denominational and charismatic.
Joel Osteen (who became lead pastor in 1999) the church grew rapidly — moving into the former Compaq Center in 2005 (a 16,800-seat facility) and reaching weekly attendance in the tens of thousands.
